Heating Engineer

A home heating system is more than the boiler on the kitchen wall. When rooms stay cold, the hot water runs lukewarm or the pump hums all night, Pro Plumbers looks at the whole circuit, from the appliance to the last radiator valve, and explains what is going on before any work starts.

ABOUT THIS SERVICE

Who to call when the heating misbehaves

Most heating complaints start with a symptom rather than a known fault. A boiler that fires but leaves the upstairs cold may point to circulation, a sticking zone valve or a thermostat in the wrong place. Radiators that are warm at the top and cool at the bottom suggest sludge in the system water. Hot water that fades halfway through a shower could be the boiler, the cylinder or its controls. Our engineers cover boilers, pumps and circulation, radiators and valves, programmers and room thermostats, hot water cylinders and the quality of the water inside the pipes, so you are not passed between trades for one problem.

BENEFITS

Why one engineer for the whole system helps

Fewer wasted visits

Because the same engineer can look at the boiler, pump, valves and controls, a fault that sits between two parts of the system is less likely to be missed.

Registered for the work in hand

We hold Gas Safe, OFTEC and G3 unvented qualifications, so gas boilers, oil boilers and unvented cylinders can all be dealt with properly.

Clear explanations

You hear what was found, what it means for the rest of the system and what can wait, so decisions are yours to make.

Which registration covers which job

Different parts of a heating system need different qualifications, and it is worth knowing which applies. Work on gas boilers and gas pipework must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Oil-fired boilers fall under OFTEC registration. Unvented hot water cylinders, the pressurised type often found in airing cupboards of newer homes, need G3 unvented qualification. Refrigerant work on air conditioning needs F-Gas certification, which we hold through REFCOM. Pro Plumbers holds all four, and we are a Worcester Bosch accredited installer who also fits Vaillant boilers.

Gas homes and oil homes are checked differently

In a house on mains gas, the engineer looks at gas pressure and supply to the boiler, the flue and the combustion readings as part of fault finding. In a home off the gas main with an oil boiler, attention turns to the burner, nozzle, oil filter and the supply line arriving at the boiler. The radiators, pump, valves and controls are much the same in both, so the circuit side of the diagnosis follows a similar path.

What to have ready when you phone

A few details help us arrive prepared. Note the make and model of the boiler, usually printed on a label inside the flap or on the casing. Write down any fault code or flashing light. Tell us which rooms are cold, whether the hot water is affected too, whether the pressure gauge has moved and whether any recent work has been done. A photo of the boiler and the controls can be useful.

Checking an engineer's registration

Before anyone works on your gas appliances, ask to see their Gas Safe ID card. It shows the engineer's photo, licence number and the categories of work they are qualified for, and you can check it with the Gas Safe Register. OFTEC registered technicians also carry identification. A genuine engineer will be happy for you to look.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a heating engineer the same as a gas engineer?

Not always. A gas engineer is registered for gas appliance work. A heating engineer deals with the whole system, including radiators, pumps, controls and cylinders. Our engineers cover both.

Can you look at an oil boiler and the radiators on the same visit?

Yes. We are OFTEC registered for oil boilers, and the radiators, valves and controls can be checked at the same time.

My heating works but some rooms are always cold. Is it worth a visit?

Yes. Uneven heat often comes from balancing, sludge, a sticking valve or a control problem, and it can usually be traced.
