Thermostat and Heating Control Repair
If the heating ignores its schedule, runs continuously or will not respond to a thermostat, the fault may lie beyond the display. Pro Plumbers investigates heating controls in Sevenoaks, from batteries and receivers to zone valves and wiring centres.
ABOUT THIS SERVICE
Understanding the complete heating demand
Heating controls form a chain: a room requests warmth, a controller passes that demand onwards and the heating equipment must respond. Replacing the thermostat without checking the rest of that chain can leave the original problem unresolved. Pro Plumbers has been trading for 15 years and works from 11 Lime Tree Walk, Sevenoaks TN13 1YH. We ask how your heating and hot water normally operate, which controls are fitted and what changed before the fault appeared, allowing the investigation to follow the actual system rather than a generic wiring assumption.
Minimum charge £90 + VAT, including the first hour on site. Larger jobs get a fixed, no-obligation price.

OUR PROCESS
How It Works
01
Map the controls and symptoms
We identify thermostats, programmers, receivers and heating zones, then compare the requested settings with the behaviour you describe.
02
Test the demand pathway
Checks follow the signal through relevant controls, wiring and valves to establish where the heating request is lost or held on.
03
Restore and demonstrate control
Once the agreed repair is complete, we test schedules and zone responses and show you how to make everyday adjustments.
BENEFITS
Heating controls checked as a connected system
Compatibility before replacement
A proposed thermostat is checked against the boiler interface and zoning arrangement, not selected merely because its display looks similar.
Separate heating and hot water checks
Programmer channels and valve responses are considered individually where the system allows independent control.
Settings you can understand
The handover focuses on useful schedules, overrides and temperature changes rather than leaving you with unexplained app menus.
Wireless thermostats and receiver communication
A wireless room thermostat can show a normal temperature while its receiver has lost the link that carries the heating demand. Flat batteries, pairing problems, poor positioning or interruption to the receiver supply can produce different versions of the same complaint. Note any warning symbols and whether a receiver indicator changes when you increase the target temperature. Re-pairing should follow the model instructions, because random button sequences can erase settings without addressing the underlying loss of communication.
Smart controls, apps and internet connections
An app showing the system as offline does not automatically mean that the boiler or room thermostat has failed. Some controls retain local schedules without internet access, while others have features that depend on a working hub or cloud connection. Tell us about recent router changes, power cuts or account alterations. We separate connectivity issues from the local heating demand and check the intended control method, including whether the boiler uses a simple switched input or a compatible communication protocol.
Programmers, clock settings and unexpected heating
A programmer may provide separate time channels for space heating and stored hot water, with overrides that can easily be mistaken for a fault. Incorrect clocks, holiday modes or schedules copied across the wrong days can change when the heating starts. Where settings are correct but the boiler continues to run, further checks are needed rather than repeatedly resetting the clock. We compare programmed periods with room temperature demand and the actual response of the system at each stage.
Zone valves and wiring centres
Motorised zone valves control where heated water flows, and their electrical switches may also be involved in enabling the boiler. A valve that sticks, a failed actuator or an incorrect wiring connection can therefore look like a thermostat problem. Wiring centres bring these connections together and require safe isolation and competent testing. Never bridge terminals to force the heating on: control circuits vary, and an unsuitable connection can damage equipment or expose you to dangerous voltage.
Batteries, placement and replacement choices
For a battery-powered thermostat, use the battery type specified by the manufacturer and check polarity before refitting the cover. A weak display is useful evidence, but a fresh set of batteries cannot repair a failed relay or receiver. Thermostat position also matters: draughts, direct sunlight and nearby heat sources can distort the temperature it senses. If replacement is warranted, we consider existing wiring, power requirements and zone arrangements before discussing a wired, wireless or smart alternative.
Testing the result and discussing costs
Control repairs should be tested through both a call for heat and a satisfied temperature, rather than judged only by the boiler starting once. Where appropriate, we also check that separate zones and hot water demand remain independent. Call 01732 444555 to describe the controls fitted and arrange a visit; our minimum charge is £90 + VAT, including the first hour on site. Gas Safe or OFTEC qualifications are relevant where associated appliance work falls within those disciplines, while G3 relates to unvented hot water work rather than thermostat pairing.
OUR ACCREDITATIONS

What Our Customers Say
“We called Pro Plumbers after our boiler broke down. Jamie quickly identified the issue, collected the required part, and had everything up and running again the very same day.”
“We had a broken boiler on a cold day. David was with us within 2 hours and had it sorted.”
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the screen working when the heating is off?
The screen may have its own battery supply while the receiver, valve or boiler has a separate fault. A live display therefore confirms very little about whether the heating demand reaches the appliance.
Will changing batteries lose my thermostat settings?
That varies by model, so check the user guide before removing them. Make a note of your schedule and replace batteries promptly if the manufacturer recommends doing so.
Can a zone valve cause heating to stay on?
Certain valve or switching faults can maintain an unwanted demand or allow heat into a zone. Testing is needed to distinguish that behaviour from a stuck thermostat relay or an active override.
Do I need a smart thermostat to repair my controls?
An upgrade is not automatically necessary; a compatible conventional repair may be sufficient. We discuss replacement features only after establishing the existing fault and system requirements.
What should I have ready for a controls visit?
Provide photographs of the thermostat, programmer and receiver if accessible, plus a description of which rooms or hot water functions are affected. Leave wiring covers closed for the engineer.
